The number 1 reason why I love this lighting system is because it’s BEAUTIFUL! If you look carefully at many of the beauty and fashion bloggers out there, you may have noticed the tell-tale sign that they are using a ring light because of the “catch light”. You literally see a beautiful ring reflection in the eyes. I’ve worked on many fashion photo shoots for editorials, designers, websites, fashion shows, etc. and many of the times the photographer will use a Ring Flash. I love both because I love beauty lighting. There’s many types of lighting styles and configurations out there but my personal style favors true beauty lighting. I love that slightly over blown, even, all around lighting that helps to enhance the face by eliminating dark shadows and even makes the skin look smoother and softer without any photoshop or post production magic! The right lighting will do that!
You know what I strongly dislike? Tradtional 3 point lighting.
I know it’s what everyone learns in lighting 101 whether you’re a photographer, videographer, lighting tech or just a really nosey makeup artist turned lighting expert. Yes, I get hired not just for my makeup and styling skills because now i’ve become a lighting ninja! My clients hire me because they totally trust that I will insure that they will look their absolute best and that goes way beyond just what I do with makeup and wardrobe. It’s what I do afterwards, before we start shooting as their personal eyes behind the camera to make sure the lighting is just right. The photo above of Oprah and my boyfriend Justin (I call him J.T.) are photos that I took off my TV so please excuse the bad glare. This was from Oprah’s Master Class series with Justin Timberlake and it showed the perfect illustration of beauty lighting on Ms. O and traditional 3 point lighting on my boyfriend. Notice the difference in how even Oprah’s lighting is all around her face. Look at the configuration of how they set up her lighting and the beautiful glowy effect it creates. Now notice my boyfriend’s lighting. See how dramatic it is. Look at the shadows that are purposely created on him especially on the (camera) right side of the photo. Look at the difference in the under eye areas on Oprah compared to J.T. There’s quite a bit of difference in their ages but it’s the very different type of lighting that is used for the same episode show but let’s face it on a man, oh and what a hunky talented man my boyfriend is….you can get away with creating such dramatic shadows and purposely adding it in especially for this particular show, Master Class where he’s just telling his life story. Now personally, as a woman who is now in her 40’s, I want beauty lighting no matter what i’m shooting! I want to look my best and it makes me feel more confident about creating my own videos when I find myself now stepping out from behind the camera and in front!
