So many people are surprised when I tell them I wear waterproof eye makeup, especially mascara, every single day. I love waterproof mascara (DiorShow of course!) because it’s the only formulation that will keep any degree of curl to my stick straight lashes. Plus I never look like a raccoon halfway through my day or 10 minutes into my sweat drenched workout.
I’ve got this waterproof makeup application down to a science but how do you safely and easily remove it without needing a jack hammer or stretching and pulling on your delicate eyes and losing precious eye lashes?? It’s super easy with the right product! I swear by oil cleansers. They are great for the entire face for all skin types even the most oily! Think about it…oil cuts oil. Not all cosmetic grade oils are created equal and just like with food, not all oils are bad for you. These premium grade oils completely dissolve all your waterproof eye makeup products even your most bulletproof waterproof mascara. Best of all, they emulsify with water and rinse off with no residue unlike some oily eye makeup removers especially the pads that come pre-soaked, yuck!
I used Shu Uemura Oil Cleansers for years but sadly this brand is no longer being sold in the U.S. as of summer 2010. Boo! *** If you come across any grab one and one for me too, haha! Luckily I was introduced to MAC’s Cleanse Off Oil last year and it’s become my new fave. All the cosmetic companies are jumping on the oil cleanser band wagon like Bobbi Brown, Origins and Lancome just to name a few.
To remove, I just dispense one pump onto a cotton ball and hold it over my eye for a few seconds and then very gently wipe off. Repeat on the other eye, rinse off with water and finish by cleansing the rest of my face with my Clarisonic. I’ve tried a lot of eye makeup removers but nothing removes as thoroughly, completely and effortlessly like these oil cleansers. Trust me, there’s zero stinging, irritation or pulling/stretching on the super delicate skin around my eyes which you never want to do anyway unless you want to help speed-up the aging process!
**I found out after I wrote this blog that Shu Uemura is still available in the U.S. on their website! Yay! I still need to find out if your old Pro Makeup Artist cards can be used online though so stay tuned or please let me know if you know! www.shuuemura-usa.com
When you need a quick fix like when you’re super exhausted and just want to dive into your bed, the Neutrogena cloth cleansing towelettes are always in my bathroom. Make sure it’s the makeup remover in the blue packaging and it says “patented formula dissolves all traces of makeup even waterproof mascara”. If you use these regularly, you can buy them at Costco in a mega pack for a steal of a price. Gotta love that Costco!
Thanks for reading! Muah! xoxo!

I always get a mild "raccoon eye" during the day whether I sweat or not. Here in Charleston SC where humidity is NOT my friend…it’s even worse. I had abandoned water=proof mascara because of exactly what you called it, "the jackhammer removal" process. I am going to try your recommendation. I am too busy to be worried about checking for the eye-smudge all day & need to go back to waterproof product. Many thanks! (I found you from a Twitter post)
