If you ever wake up in the morning looking like a puffer fish aka sushi face or with goldfish eyes, I wrote this blog just for you! Whether it’s because of the extra salt you consumed the night before, having one too many glasses of wine or maybe you deal with various auto immune issues that cause puffiness to the face & especially your eyes, here are all my tried, tested & true products that I have in both my personal as well as professional kit arsenal along with my Pro Hacks to quickly diminish the puffiness!
As a professional makeup artist working on production shoots for film, TV, commercial, etc. we usually have a very early call time and makeup is the first thing the talent goes through so i’ve learned a few tricks that help de-puff the eyes quickly when we don’t have all morning to naturally get rid of that “morning face”.
Choose the right product for the right job! Often times when it comes to puffy eyes we reach for an eye cream but did you know that if you are choosing one that fights fine lines & wrinkles, it can actually make your puffiness worse! Save those heavier creams to battle crows feet for night time but during the day, you want to look for an Eye GEL or a lightweight cream that is specifically formulated to help puffiness. Also, the heavier eye creams are often the culprit behind mid-day raccoon eyes even if you’re using industrial strength waterproof eye liner and mascara!
Here are a few of my faves in no particular order:
Ole Henriksen Ultimate Lift Eye Gel $34.00 *A true eye gel formula that unlike most products can be used both under the eyes as well as on puffy eye lids. Use very sparingly! A little goes a long way: http://shopstyle.it/l/d7sz
It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Cream $48.00 While this one is not a gel formula, it’s a very lightweight cream that does several things including reducing puffiness. I recommend this one for those who need a multi-tasking product that helps with hydration to fight the look of fine lines and de-puffing : http://shopstyle.it/l/d7sV
MAC Cosmetics Fast Response Eye Cream $32.00 This is the product i’ve been using the longest. Literally for two decades if not longer! While it may not be as technologically advanced as the first two, it really does a great job of working underneath concealer even when i’m doing a full coverage look without causing any slippage or blending issues : http://shopstyle.it/l/d7rh
Mally Beauty Eye Gel Applicator $15.00 This tiny little tool is truly magical! When I really need to depuff the eyes quickly and make tired eyes look bright awake, I use this to apply the eye gels. It’s made out of metal so it’s naturally cold to the touch which helps speed up the depuffing process. Pro Tip! Do not go back and forth when using this product. Start on the inner corner and gently sweep out towards the hairline and then begin again at the inner corner. This helps to flush the excess fluid away from the eye area! Repeat a few times as necessary. : http://shopstyle.it/l/d7oP
Here’s another one of my tricks to speed up the depuffing process! Keep your eye gels in the frig or what I do on set is to leave them in an ice bath for just a minute or two. The same goes for the Mally Eye Gel Tool! Just like icing an injury helps to bring the inflammation and puffiness down, the same goes for our eyes. Be careful not to get the products too cold causing an ice burn which is a real thing whether it’s icing an injury or your eyes! It should only be cool to the touch.
If your whole face is puffy, try splashing your face for 1 minute with ice water. That’s a very old Hollywood film trick made famous by the “No wire hangers!!!” actress, Joan Crawford.
If you have extra time in the morning or maybe you’re getting your headshots taken, filming Youtube videos or your online course and need to look camera ready these are a few more options to consider. Take tea bags that contain caffeine (that is key!), have been brewed and most importantly, completely cooled to gently lay over your eyes. Good ole cucumber slices (use cold ones straight out of the frig) will help to depuff but both of these options will require extra time for you to lounge around with your eyes closed and that’s a luxury we don’t always have.
I also love Skindinavia Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels $30.00 (8 pairs) When you have a little extra time (10-15 minutes) or can do your hair first, eat breakfast, these eye patches work incredibly well too! : http://shopstyle.it/l/d7ub
